2008 DONE
Mostly, anywhoo.

It has been busy this past month and a bit! Finals threatened to overwhelm me at a couple of points - I had two papers and two written exams due within a week's period. Ended up doing two all-nighters to get the papers done (strangely, the 12-pager turned out to take me more time than the 34-pager), which is something I hope I have never to do again. As can be seen in my previous entry, Nethack makes a wonderful procrastination tool during exam-study period.

Well, actually, something I will never do again, since I passed all my courses and all. I AM DONE WITH THIS UNIVERSITY BUSINESS. (For now. Grad school is still something I might do, eventually.) Convocation won't be until June, but still, the taking classes part is all done with.

Christmas was pretty good. I mostly just got clothes, along with the requisite chocolates and grooming stuffs, but it was all stuff I needed. Some things for the trip, too - a French press so I can have easy coffee on the road, for one. :D I'll eventually be getting Chrono Trigger DS, but alas, Sean had money flow problems so that one will have to wait for a little. At least I've played the game a dozen times already, so it's no biggie to have to wait a little bit longer. XD

My computer finally got itself upgraded to XP (after a long and arduous battle with motherboard drivers), but alas, the bluescreens that I hoped would go away continue. Still trying to pinpoint the problem therein, but Windows error messages barely tell you anything useful. :\

Also, snow! We had a huge dumping of it in the Lower Mainland, better than I've seen in quite some years. Knee deep around my place, at the peak of it. There was much shoveling, and I got pushed into a snowbank at one point (>.>), and all was well. Trav and I went tobboganing yesterday, actually - unfortunately, the snow'd begun to melt, so the run was all icy and packed and bumpy. My bottom has some rather... interesting bruises on it. Did the splits at one point and flew/faceplanted right over the top of the sled. :D The only lasting injury seems to be a strained middle finger. Have to keep it straight lest I pull it further and devolve into curses. Of course, either way, I'm kind of cursing if I make a fist.

Noooow I just have to find a job to tide me over the next couple of months. Come March, Trav and I will likely be heading out on the great road trip of doom, covering the States and Canada. After that, who knows?

It's not been a bad year, all in all. The three terms of school wasn't very cool, especially with the volume of writing courses I took, but it all worked out in the end. It just feels... really weird to be done with it, at the same time it's a relief. I've been at SFU for, proportionally, the most time against any of my schooling. Suddenly, it's just over and done with. Time to put the books away and find a real job. Time to move out and get a place of my own. It's a little scary, but I think it'll all be okay in the end.

New phase of life, indeed.

There are too many, Honey! A billigan of them, even. I've been looking them up as I come across them and ruling out what I know it isn't, so I think it's a driver issue, but... Sigh. I've seen at least four different ones so far.

Everywhere!! Well, not everywhere exactly, but all the important bits!

Alas, the BSODs vanish before I can hardly take a look at the hex codes. There's two that are more frequent - one ends in 08E (Error code 1000008e, parameter1 c000001d, parameter2 bf844735, parameter3 b9156b60, parameter4 00000000), another in 0D1 (Error code 100000d1, parameter1 004bcf02, parameter2 00000002, parameter3 00000000, parameter4 ebefc881).
I've done tests on the CPU and the RAM, and it's not them. I've dusted the whole thing out, so it's not overheating any more if it was (of course, I haven't seen a bluescreen since I dusted it today, so...). I don't think my mobo is flaking out. The only iffy thing might be the video card - or its drivers. It tends to go down after viewing certain websites, or certain PDF files, things like that. If it 'screens on me again, I'm going to start going back to older versions of the drivers. We'll have to see.

California is important! I have lots of friends there~

08E search came up with http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315335

0D1 this one came up with bios settings not matching to drivers installed, bad driver, or the memory is not 100% compatible with the system it seems like. have you tried removing just one stick of ram if you have more than one and booting it that way? this one also matched: http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316208 edit: try changing raid configurations?

dunno if these will help you but I hope they do!!

California is big! Are you gonna visit Honey!?

I haven't fiddled with my RAM, but I really don't think it's that - I ran memtest on it the other day and it passed a number of times, so it seems to be all in working order. Raid config I actually fiddled with today, so maybe it'll be better now, who knows.

I could, certainly! We have plans to cross it alllll, and have to go to LA and SF for certaincertain.

I didn't think it was my RAM for one computer, but I decided why not, take a stick out and see what happens. The stop error code went away, but that was ages ago. anyway hopefully the raid config stopped the other one.

cool! let me know when you are near meeee... I work full time but I hope I can take some time off or meet up after work... or weekend!

Yeah, right now it's a waiting game. :|

I will let you know closer to the date! We'll probably be down in Cali sometime during mid-March, but we don't really have any set timeline of where we're going to be when, so!

Memtest is no guarantee. I've had ram pass memtest, and still be the culprit in the end. Always try the "remove one and see" test.

I'm still in the waiting and see part to see if my fiddling inside the case helped any, hehe. It may just have been a loose cable or something. It hasn't crashed over the course of the day yet, but then again, I haven't hardly used it all day either.

If things go bad, I'll try taking out one of my sticks.

I just downloaded CT for my DS.

Took me 15 minutes to stop just listening to the music and get playing... also the title movie sequence is swanky.

For a long road trip, you may want to invest in an R4 or similar just to get ROMs. The variety can prevent going batshit :)

Finding a job now is... tricky. Good luck on that... I'm hanging on to the one I have quite hard.

I do have an R4 already, hehe. I just really wanted to actually buy CT, since theoretically throwing them money for things I actually want is a good idea. XD

I did download the Japanese version and play it through while I was waiting for Christmas, but there's quite a few copy-protection traps, and one of them didn't get bypassed by the patching I did - right after the Blackbird sequence, viewing the equipment of the second person in my party at the time of doing the Blackbird causes the game to freeze. :| So I'll just have to wait and be patient. No point in starting another game on the ROM if I'm just going to get it anywhoo... And I can always boot up my SNES cart if I really have an itch to play. XD

Yeah, I understand. I don't really much care what the job is at the moment, so long as it's just temporary. I may have an in with the BC Nurses Union, actually - my neighbour works for them, and she says there might be a position available for temp work, so we'll have to see.

Ahh, I just downloaded, ummm... 2 days ago, so I just got Robo. Playing on breaks at work slows progress considerably.

I HAVE A COMPLAINT! There's no Suspend option! Drives me batty!

The copy I downloaded said it was pre-patched, so I guess I'll have to wait and see. Eventually someone will make it fully patched... and in the meantime, your .SAV file is still good.

That would be pretty handy... jobs are kinda scarce around now is all. While the call center at Vancity didn't cut any jobs, they have done a hiring freeze and it's indefinite.

Psst, I'll give you a hint. Closing your DS suspends things. XD Seriously, I've left mine running on sleep mode for days and it's not run the battery out.

It's true. It is a busy time of year, though, so it's not like I have a whole lot of time to play it right now anywhoo. That and my DS's hinge broke, which makes playing a little difficult.

Oh, believe me, I know. Trav got laid off from his programming job at a video game studio two weeks ago. Didn't help that he was just coming off a co-op term and going into another two months worth of contract - they always cut the co-ops loose first.

I know about THAT, but it still irritates me to no end. I've been playing Summon Night and it has a suspend, why can't CT? Every second game has this option. It looks like a glaring oversight.

Broken hinge = :(
I'd almost consider replacing the unit in that case. Then again, the DSi is due out by summer...

Eh, I dunno. I don't really tend to use suspend or quicksave modes that much anyways. Too used to CT and most of the ports I play to know what I can and can't do in five minutes, hehe.

Yeeeah. It's a thought, but I've got a lot of things to spend money on this year, and a new DS may not work in the cards for a while. I'm going to try gluing it back together - it's one of the little circular pieces - but I've been so busy lately I haven't had time to sit down and do it.
